How TEDx proves independent creativity in the age of algorithms is more important than ever

The concept of a TED Talk has become synonymous with innovation and future creativity, and this weekend's TEDxManchester presents the perfect opportunity to highlight the importance of independent thinking in the age of algorithms.

Inspiring the minds of the future, the Bridgewater Hall event features fascinating 18-minute talks delivered by personnel from all walks of life. England Lioness, Jill Scott, headlines this year's roster, which features a range of experts including neuroscientists, conscious communicators and even international magicians.

The TEDx programme ignites imaginations acrossn the country and its mission statement of awakening curiosity and propelling the pursuit of knowledge is more relevant than ever in the digital age.

Are social media algorithms limiting our creativity?

The state of social media and its effect on younger generations is a frequent talking point, particularly with the UK Government launching a consultation into whether under-16s should be banned from accessing social media this week.

Social media has always been a powerful tool for connection and self-expression, which has super-charged the careers of thousands of young people across the country. However, as highlighted by education resource centre, Stafford Global, its algorithm-driven design can unintentionally limit creativity.

By consistently serving users content that mirrors what they already engage with, platforms can narrow exposure to new perspectives and ideas, particularly for younger users whose creative instincts are still developing.

Is AI also affecting critical thinking?

This phenomenon has been rapidly accelerated by the adoption of AI-powered platforms such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini into our everyday lives.

A government survey published in January found that 73% of the public have used AI in their day-to-day life over the past month. Whilst only 35% frequently use generative AI chatbots, almost three-quarters of the public are exposed to ‘passive’ AI developments such as predictive text, virtual assistants and AI overviews in their Google searches.

As recently spotlighted by MIT research lab, the adoption of AI is harming our critical thinking abilities, which is again becoming much more prevalent amongst the younger generations.

The importance of independent creativity

In the age of algorithms, creative thinking is more important than ever. However, our reliance on new technology and communication platforms poses the threat of harming future innovation.

One of the most famous TED Talks came from American academic, Brené Brown, who discussed the idea of 'the power of vulnerability'. The talk explored themes around the fear of failure and the natural instinct of settling for safety, rather than being vulnerable to something not going as planned.

The talk remains more prevalent than ever. Those who fear challenging the status quo of the digital landscape will be those left behind by those backed by independent creativity.

Brands that ‘play it safe’ and base the validity of their ideas on feedback from LLMs will slowly lose engagement from their audiences, while brands taking calculated risks will be seen as the trailblazers.

The importance of TEDx

Events like TEDx Manchester are crucial in opening the eyes of our community. Their diverse range of speakers gives an insightful snapshot into other people’s lives - which can be a rarity on traditional social media platforms.

Most importantly, TEdx embodies Democracy’s core values of curiosity and being idea-driven, which is why we’re so excited to be sponsoring this year's event.

We will be attending the event alongside a group of young, brilliant minds from Loreto High School in Chorlton, as part of our commitment to inspire the next generation to think creatively about the future.

How Democracy is super-charging challenger brands in the age of algorithms

At Democracy, we’re always looking at ways of thinking outside the box, which is embodied by our challenger brand mentality. Every morning, our team review the day's newspapers, radio shows, podcast mentions and social channels to identify and pounce on reactive opportunities for our clients.

We host regular creativity sessions for the whole team to brainstorm ideas for campaigns, including TROJAN’s Britain’s Toughest Tradie competition and Tequila Rose’s ‘festi-sentials’ vending machine to help festival-goers stay glam, no matter what the British weather throws at them.
