Annual filters launched by Snapchat

Snapchat geofilters are an inexpensive way for smaller brands to get on to social media’s hippest platform.

Now Snapchat is making it even easier with the introduction of annual geofilters, allowing brands to ‘own’ a defined area, either around their business or other significant place.

Buying a geofilter – which can start from £500 a year depending on the size of area – means your brand filter will be available to Snapchat users when they use the app in that location.

Final prices are dependent on the location, size and time.

Does Facebook want to become a TV channel?

Facebook’s algorithm has been altered again, to prioritise longer-length videos.

The change now monitors the length of time users are engaged with a video clip on the social network, in relation to the overall length of that clip. This ‘percentage completion’ metric means priority will be given to longer clips.

This move is seen as being a major part of Facebook’s drive to become a realistic alternative to television, especially with younger users.

FB Messenger trialling ads

Ads are now beginning to appear on Facebook’s messenger platform.

The test – which is confined to Australia and Thailand users at present – will see advertising appear on the Messenger home screen, below favourites and above the Active Now section, making them hard to ignore.

It remains to be seen whether the one billion monthly users of Messenger take to their social platform being disrupted in this way.

Tumblr has joined the image filter social party, with the addition of features to let users enhance pictures with stickers, GIFs and more.

If this sounds similar to the features already available on Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram, well, it’s because it is.

New stickers will be added monthly for Tumblr’s 300 million monthly users, with special ones created for calendar events such as Valentine’s Day and Easter.
